Second Rainbow Gatherings Event – November 15th
The second event for the Comox Valley Queer community - this is a secular event provided by Habibi’s and the Affirm Committee of Comox United Church. It is being held Friday, November 15th from 7-9 PM at Habibi’’s Mediterranean Restaurant, across 5th Street from the Sid Williams Theatre.
It will present several speakers exploring Queer Life in the Comox Valley. Invitations are being made to a variety of inspiring speakers from the Comox Valley to present personal aspects of their experiences of being and living queer in this community. There will be a variety of ages, orientations, preferences, and, of course, perspectives.
These speakers are some of the fascinating members of the Comox Valley queer community, They will share their experiences in the cultural and community-based organizations serving residents of our community.
The event is free but tickets are required through www.eventbrite.com . Snacks provided free by Habibis and drinks (soft drinks, juices, beer and wine) are available bycash or card. This is a gift to the queer community to encourage intergenerational gatherings and sharing that build community and are fun and engaging.
The first of these monthly offerings was held in October. It was a marvellously challenging and informative Queer Trivial Pursuit for intergenerational teams. Each of the 40 participants took home a great prize. There won’t be an event in December but they will return on Friday, January 17th but may be at a different venue because of
bigger space needs.
This is a safe and inclusive venue and event being offered by Habibis Restaurant and
the Affirm Committee of Comox United Church. Because of their historically negative
history with churches, many members of the queer community have a warranted
concern around church sponsored events. Consequently, the Rainbow Gatherings
specifically have no proselytizing or evangelizing permitted, or carried out, at these
events.
